This glossary is about the terms that I have encountered during my studies at Ahuntsic College. This is my last year in my health science program here, and these words are field related terms that I didn't know the meaning until I research them. More precisely, the topic of this glossary is on the immune system terms, Lyme disease terms and a few engineering terms. Some words have photos that illustrate what they mean. The method I used to find these words was that when I was reading an article, I underlined the words I didn't understand or knew what they meant and afterwards I searched their definitions. In general, this glossary is on medical and engineering field related words that I didn't know their meaning before doing this project.
antibody
noun
a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen. Antibodies combine chemically with substances which the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood.
Example: This antibody if administered from early childhood, possibly through diet, might be effective at preventing intestinal infection.

biomarker
noun
a measurable substance in an organism whose presence is indicative of some phenomenon such as disease, infection, or environmental exposure.
Example: For example, blood pressure, body temperature and body mass index are all biomarkers.

adjective
Persisting for a long time or constantly recurring.
Example: This 23-year old lady who has been suffering from chronic, daily pelvic pain for the past 7 years.

cogeneration
noun
the generation of electricity and other energy jointly, especially the utilization of the steam left over from electricity generation to produce heat.
Example: For example, a generator for sale produces electrical power as the primary energy source and waste heat as the secondary energy source.

diabetes
noun
a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine.
Example: Mary has type 2 diabetes.

noun
the branch of medicine which deals with the incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases and other factors relating to health.
Example: Topics examined through epidemiology include as high blood pressure, mental illness and obesity.

an essential supporting structure of a building, vehicle, or object.
Example: Microsoft, StackOverflow, GoDaddy are different frameworks.

a feature or component of a certain device or software application that enables humans to engage and interact with machines.
Example: touchscreens and keyboards are human machine interface.

hyperthermia
noun
an abnormally high body temperature caused by a failure of the heat-regulating mechanisms of the body to deal with the heat coming from the environment.
Example: Heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after prolonged exposure to the heat), heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are commonly known forms of hyperthermia.

immune
adjective
totally or partially resistant to a particular infectious disease or pathogen.
Example: Neutrophiles and other immune cells recruited to the affected area release histamine and leukotrienes, which act of β-adrenergic receptors embedded in the bronchial epithelium, causing bronchoconstriction.

intravenous
adjective
existing or taking place within, or administered into, a vein or veins.
Example: Intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis, usually a first-generation cephalosporin should be initiated.

Example: The ticks (Ixodes) are not only injurious as blood-suckers, but are now credited with carrying the germs of Texas cattle-fever, just as mosquitoes carry those of malaria.

lyme disease

an inflammatory disease characterized at first by a rash, headache, fever, and chills, and later by possible arthritis and neurological and cardiac disorders, caused by bacteria that are transmitted by ticks.
Example: Justine just got diagnosed with the Lyme disease.
